Bentwood Boxes are traditionally used to store food, clothing, regalia, treasures and sometimes used as burial containers. They are made by steaming planks of cedar and carefully shaping the wood. They are then carved or painted with beautiful designs.
James has lead several groups both within the school district and communities of Smithers, Witset and Houston BC, teaching students how to create their own bentwood boxes.
The projects help reconnect students with their traditions.
This picture of James was taken during a workshop facilitated through an organization called ORAH, which stands for Organization against Racism and Hatred, with support from the Smithers and Houston campuses of Coast Mountain College.
James also teaches many classes on Northwest Coast First Nations art including painting, carving and drum-making.
